this is the true story can one solar system and have their lives taped find out what happened to stop being a mystery and start the real world science Rules the property of matter known to be -7 seconds this is brought to you by a grant from the Copernicus Foundation 15 referring I'm talking to you from the only place we know of where they're living things like you and me right because you're living on the planet Earth altogether there are nine planets they all go around the Sun in the same direction if we can get Wing above the Earth's north pole we see that they all go this way opposite of the way a clock turns counterclockwise the solar system of the sun on this this part of our Solar System model of science right here is the first planet Mercury list of plenty of heavy metal real hot House of Lu also no moons but plenty of toxic yellow clouds because of its thick atmosphere it's the hottest planet in the solar system and there's our planet Earth what moon protective atmosphere in liquid water need I say more is Mars Mars big red and Dead Two Moons and full of iron oxide is a very large ball of gas we call the planet Jupiter Jupiter Jupiter Jupiter the largest planet of them all 60 moons and one big next if we keep going past another giant ball of gas Saturn it's the one with the big flat Rings Saturn Saturn Saturn is Rings rings and at least 18 moons farther and farther from the Sun we pass urine it's just very thin rings Uranus is planet blew it over 14 wins and recently discovered rings how farther Neptune Neptune Neptune it moons in cold cold cold glasses planet with one Moon the end or is it very cold off in the distance planets and close to the Sun are much warmer so out here it's cold in here it's warm and the Earth is just right distance from the Sun repeat living things like you and me alive you're alive when we show models for pictures of the planets we usually show all of the planets at the same time but were there Planet that's very hard to do because the real plans have a lot of space between them so let's say that this balloon is the Sun that it's a little over a meter across send the planet Mercury would be here 39 meters away and would be just about this big that's all they would be to the planet Mercury here 2 meters that would be vents have a son still behind us and look apparent 100m everybody now we got to get serious there's Mars have a distances start to get very large those product those models are the actual size the sun still back there here is Jupiter 520m from the Sun that's over half a kilometer and Jupiter would be about this bit not while here Saturn the one with a big Rings 953 meters from the Sun almost a kilometer out way out here and this would be your earnest almost two kilometers from the sun it's way out here if you get the picture everything is really far apart there's a lot of space in space things are really far apart on this model that's cuz everything's to scale so we don't always make models like that's the scale they're huge Neptune and I see Blue Planet 3 kilometers from our weather balloon Sun show me around here someplace down here Bell Bell down here what's a Kik fish 4 km from our Sun Pluto is 40 times farther away from the Sun than our Earth it's over 6 kilometers from the Sun to get it now the distances between the real planets and Rihanna's face are huge Dennis model the planets look rabbit close to the Sun play but actually from Megan's and millions of miles away from the Sun spaceship on the Earth traveling through space is the rate of 1000 miles per hour it's usually picks up the same at 1,000 miles per hour wake the Flash only because they are called laminate Worthington Inn Worthington smiles and moans ready to make you one. sawdust World on moons clothes from the one that started it all the one that causes the tides the one that goes around and around the Moon looks like the biggest thing in the sky doesn't it there's a lot of wackos in a city like this the time you chalk it up to the moon and don't ask questions even if you don't know where it came from my name is Luna Luna Van Dyke it's a Dutch name elliptical orbit relax Luna it's just me Lou lunar unar I haven't seen you in a blue moon we have some unfinished business you were supposed to tell me where the moon came from unless you conveniently forgot you see there four basic theories where the moon came from the first that it was a part of the earth that bro God what is the theory that it was a small they got trapped in the earth's gravitational pull or there's a theory that it's a world full of dust and gas is left over from the making of the sun there's even a few better, collided with the Earth and pushed material which outer space no one knows for sure all I know is it makes me hungry compressor to a moon pie my name is Ellen Howell and I'm in the strana mer I used telescopes like this one here in Arizona to study Astro it's a rock floating around in space these are the materials that went into forming the earth and the moon's and the other planets in our solar system we want to know what they're made of we want to where they are and we want to know mostly if they're going to hit the Earth at some time in the future if an object if you kilometers across comes hurtling in at 15 kilometers a second or so it's going to hit the ground and there's a huge explosion that's going to leave an enormous hole and a really big explosion could change the whole climate of the earth and so that's one of the things that discover asteroids are very interested in is trying to find where they are and predicting where they're going to be many decades into the future planets and Moon Shine by reflected sunlight we've laid out call the solar system on this field that's a couple hundred meters long so what there's Mercury Venus Island plan at the Earth Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune and Pluto no notice we wouldn't see any of these models we wouldn't see any of the play without light from our sun slide Sun of science without a light from the sun the planets would completely disappear without light from the sun the world would be cold than black like hahahaha this Observatory here was built about 3 years ago by a students from our own School it was built with hard work sweat labor play music Titan unless it moves we got an 18-foot Dome got 10 inch telescope here's a couple of CCD cameras the computer ate a telescope this is a CCD camera and you attach it to the lens of the telescope and then you catch it to the computer and then you get Jupiter on your little small screen got the winters here to pull the Dome around either way and the Earth's orbit is round but it's not a circle please consider the following I think that Earth's orbit would around like a soccer ball like that but it's not that perfectly round not it's more like depends squashed in a little bit the shape of planetary orbits which scientist call is the sun are we going to draw the Earth's orbit with the point of this pain that's the Earth's orbit where a circle you can draw it just like this nice round circle is the Earth's orbit isn't like that it's a little more complicated than that there's another point over here someplace in the string connecting them as much longer then as the earth goes around the Sun it makes a shake like this that's an ellipse know what when the earth is farther from the Sun it's going slowly when you're at the gate go to the sun it speeds up slow fast slow fast slow fast now these two points are called the focuses or foci of the ellipse this is the Sun and this other one is the theoretical point out in space slow fast thank you for joining me on to be more than just possible bill Bell hey Science Guy Ohio I was just I was just I was just well anyway yeah gravity between dust particles and space made all the planets end up going around the Sun in the same direction they're revolving around the Sun counterclockwise play the DS2 magnetic marbles or dust particles either drifting through space and they come here each other sometimes they go right past each other sometimes they but sometimes but sometimes sometimes they come together at just the right angle to start they're going counter-clockwise first called the red planet because it's covered in Rust you can make your own red planet just do a baking pan almost to the top full with and custom steel wool into a bun 2 centimeter pieces because still will have some prickly points makes steel wool Add Water she let the mixture spray the cover open put it in a safe place check on it everyday add water to keep it moist the water cause thrush eventually the sand will turn red just as it did on Mars but don't take our word for it you notice that the planets that are closest to the Sun move about it much more quickly than those father away gravity is the glue that holds our solar system together gravity pulls on the planets and keeps them in orbit the same way this rules on this ball Mercury the planet closest to the Sun play 88 days to go completely around us then when they're farther away that's because even though they're going fast go when their orbits are bigger it seems like the trip around the Sun in about 248 years could get of the solar system way out in outer space above the Earth North Pole and then look down you see that all the planets go around the Sun Same Direction This Way counterclockwise also see that they're all in the same plane they all go around tabletop all of them Mercury words to describe water stupid when did Red Spot Saturn rings Rings rings cold cold cold so if you're standing here in the middle you're like the Sun at the center of the solar system and the sun rotates to like this counterclockwise they laughed at me when I suggested that we have nine trains for nine planets going around the Sun counterclockwise hahahahaha bill Planet Sub car games working with the planets Arabian affirmative, I read you I'm sorry Bill afraid I can't do that I'm afraid I can't do that though this show on the planets is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it Goodbye bill patient with the National Science Foundation that's a great day for training in the space shuttle come on how do you want to be Daisy
