LOS NIETOS MIDDLE SCHOOL CLINCHES SECOND CONSECUTIVE

GOLDEN BELL AWARD AS THE SCHOOL CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF

PARTICIPATING IN “SRLA: STUDENTS RUN LOS ANGELES”

Whittier, CA — On October 1, 2024, after months of a rigorous application and selection process, the Los Nietos Middle School has earned its second prestigious CSBA Golden Bell Award in two years focusing on its strong Students Run Los Angeles (SRLA) program.

“Winning the Golden Bell Award is a tremendous honor for our Students Run LA program at Los Nietos,” said Desiree Chavez, LNMS Teacher and SRLA Lead Coach. “We are currently in our 20th year of the program, so we have been able to impact the lives of hundreds of students. All of the staff and students work so hard to accomplish their ultimate goal of running the LA Marathon and, year after year, I am amazed by them when they finally cross that finish line. We're honored to have the Golden Bell committee recognize all of the hard work and dedication that the students, teachers, and staff have put in for the last 20 years.”

SRLA is a transformative program that inspires middle and high school students to take on the challenge of completing the Los Angeles Marathon. Over several months, students train under the guidance of volunteer teachers, gradually building their endurance to tackle the 26.2-mile race.

The program promotes not only physical fitness but also personal development. By setting and achieving a major goal like running a marathon, students learn valuable life lessons in perseverance, time management, and discipline. The experience also fosters teamwork and a strong sense of community, as participants encourage each other throughout their training journey.

Los Nietos Middle School is proud to be part of this initiative for the 20th consecutive year, continuing its tradition of helping students achieve their goals and grow both physically and mentally through the SRLA experience.

As both Board President and a proud parent of two children who thrived in the Students Run Los Angeles program at Los Nietos Middle School, I witnessed firsthand the profound lasting impact it has on our students,” said Edith Marcel, Board President of Los Nietos School District. “For the past twenty years, SRLA has not only promoted physical fitness but also instilled perseverance, discipline, and motivation. We are proud of the positive role SRLA has played in shaping resilient, determined young leaders who are ready to embrace their futures with confidence and purpose.”
