Did you know that the California Department of Education mandates that students in grades 7 through 12 receive HIV/AIDS prevention education once during middle school and once during high school? Los Nietos Middle School is proud to count on Dr. Houlahan, a resident from Presbyterian Hospital, to present the topic to parents, and then to host one 7th and one 8th grade assembly on the topic for students.
For more information about the mandate, visit:
http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/he/se/piat.asp
*Permission slips will go home with students and will need to be returned by November 3rd to exclude a student from the assembly.
Excerpt from the website: "Instruction shall include: information on the nature of AIDS and its effects on the body; information on how HIV is and is not transmitted, including information on activities that present the highest risk of HIV infection; discussion of methods to reduce the risk of HIV infection; discussion of the public health issues associated with AIDS; development of refusal skills and effective decision-making skills to assist students in overcoming peer pressure and avoiding high risk activities; and discussion about societal views on AIDS."
