On October 20th, 2012, the Los Nietos School District had a community “Open House” at the Los Nietos Middle School. The event was scheduled to show former alumni, staff, and community members the renovations that were made available through the Measure M Bond initiative that was passed in 2008. The Measure M Bond Initiative asked Los Nietos residents to authorize the Los Nietos School District to “upgrade classrooms and security, improve safety and school sites, renovate outdated restrooms, and replace roofs by issuing up to $31,140,000.00 in bonds”. Los Nietos Bond Oversight Community members, John Guzman and Charles Ornelas, were on hand to see the renovations and hear about future improvements to take place later in the year.
The Los Nietos Middle School began construction in May of 2012, and being the largest school in the district required the most extensive and time-consuming work. Superintendent Vasquez, the Los Nietos Board of Trustees (Art Escobedo, Marisa B. Hernandez, Ray Chacon, and Nick Aquino), District Administration (Mary McNeil and Doug McMasters), and Principal Cardenas invited former alumni and staff that purchased engraved “Alumni Pavers” to the “Open House”. Former 15-year Los Nietos Principal and 40-year Los Nietos School employee Raymond “Bud” Chapman and his wife were also in attendance as his former students clamored around him to take pictures with their former teacher and principal.
Alumni of the Los Nietos School from as far back as the 1950s and 1940’s were in attendance to have the opportunity to walk the halls of the Los Nietos School one more time and hear about the renovations of the school that they love. Superintendent Vasquez walked the invited guests around the perimeter of the school showcasing the perimeter fencing, the new parking lots, basketball courts, and locker rooms. Principal Cardenas also showcased the school’s computer lab and parent volunteer room.
The event concluded with the unveiling of the alumni pavers that surround the historic Los Nietos Bell as well as a new bronze plaque that describes the history of the Los Nietos School District. Community members expressed gratitude to school and district administration for making such beautiful upgrades to the school they attended as children, and congratulated the District on the school’s recent academic achievements.
