Principal Cardenas met with students by grade level for expectations assemblies. Both 7th and 8th audiences were attentive, eager to learn, and had very few questions. By the end of the session with the principal, students learned school rules and consequences, dress code policies, the 4 rules of anti-bullying behavior, safety precautions, and how to get help when needed. In the future, reminders are provided in the daily announcements and in class presentations.
Special guests at the assembly from Presbyterian Hospital included Doctor Gregory Galbreath and Dr. Valerie Gallegos. Dr. Galbreath shared with students that he grew up in Whittier and resides in the city currently. He attended St. Bruno’s Elementary School, Servite High School, completed his undergraduate degree at Loyola Marymount University, and graduated medical school from La Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, Mexico. Dr. Gallegos told students that she grew up in Maywood and attended the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) for her undergraduate work, prior to graduating from SUNY Downstate’s College of Medicine in New York. Both resident doctors of PIH reminded students to get involved in activities, programs, and sports during the duration of their middle school years, in addition to putting forth their best effort academically.
