Every year, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) hosts a Math-Science Conference for 8th-grade girls in an effort to encourage them to pursue a career in STEM. AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. By providing students the opportunity to meet over 20 professional women in the fields of law enforcement, biology, engineering, medicine, and astronomy, AAUW is advancing its mission one girl at a time.
Fourteen 8th-grade girls from Los Nietos Middle School were selected by their teachers to attend this year’s conference at Whittier College. During the conference, students attended three different workshops that best aligned with their interests and received a backpack from the Myra Long Scholarship Fund committee. Students had a great time learning about the different STEM career paths!
We would like to give special thanks to all the members and volunteers of AAUW- Whittier chapter, as well as the speakers that made all of this possible.
